One of the most satisfying jobs in the carpet trade is completing a staircase. There is something very rewarding about standing back at the end and admiring the workmanship that has gone into a job. A well fitted staircase doesn’t just look good it reflects the care, skill and experience of the fitter behind it.
The curvature on the bottom step is called the bullnose, it is one of the trickiest parts of fitting the carpet on the staircase; it requires patience, precision and a keen eye for detail. Loop pile and patterned designs can make creating the perfect bullnose more tricky and this is where years of experience of carpet fitting is important to ensure that every line, curve and tuck is finished perfectly.
Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon to see corners being cut when old flooring is removed and new carpet is installed. Issues such as as incorrectly spaced grippers, loose fitting, rushed or poorly shaped bullnoses on the bottom step can affect the final result. Achieving a perfect finish every time takes time attention to detail and commitment to do the job properly.
At Coast Carpets, we believe the little things make a big difference. We always check and correct the positioning of the grippers to ensure they are spaced correctly. Every tread is spray glued to provide additional security and stability, helping the carpets to stay firmly in place for years to come.
When installing loop pile carpets on staircases, we also install grippers along the sides of every riser and tread; this is a technique we have learnt through experience and it allows the edges of the carpet to be tucked neatly. Therefore, protected from fraying. This is a small step that many companies skip in order to save time. However, this step makes a significant difference in both durability and the finish.
Another areas where we take extra care is the bottom step bullnose, rather than carpeting the tread and simply wrapping the carpet around the strip at the bottom of the step, we fit the bullnose using a continuous piece of carpet, this approach creates a much cleaner, more professional finish and improves the overall look of the staircase.
As a small family business, we offer something that many larger companies can’t. all of the carpet fitting is fitted by me and is never subcontracted, this means that every job receives the same level of care, attention and pride in workmanship. For us, staircase carpet fitting isn’t just another job, it is a craft. Furthermore, when carpet fitting is done properly, the finished craftmanship speaks for itself.
